So this year we did something a little different for our stake Youth Speech Festival.We added categories.Songs,poems and speeches,art.So I dared to enter with a poem.Oh and we divided into age groups so the mia maids and teachers competed etc.
This years theme:Timothy 4 verse 12.
"Let no man despise thy youth,but be thou an example of the believers,in word,in conversation,in charity,in spirit,in faith,in purity."
The girl called Ruth
"You'll never fit in Emily,
you might as well not try"
That's what they said to me you know,
In days that have gone by.
I was lost,I was alone
I was confused,I was afraid
The edges of my spirit;
had never been this frayed
I was born needing a wheelchair
My body was not right
The little things that you can do
For me,was an everyday fight
I was counted as disabled
Both in body and in mind
There was no one to help me
Not a friend that I could find
I tried reading the Bible
The words were just a blur
I didn't know what it contained;
that is,'til I met her
She helped me when I dropped my books
In the school hall one day
"Hi,my name's Ruth!"
I can still hear her say
Ruth was the kind of girl
Who seemed to have it made
She was the smartest in her class
The prettiest in her grade
Everyone knew who Ruth was!
The happiest girl around
The kindest,sweetest person
That I had ever found
She kept the highest standards
I never heard her swear
She shared the greatest wisdom
Her judgement always fair
I told Ruth my story
I told her 'bout my life
I told her all the pain I had
The things that caused me strife
Ruth listened to my story
She heard it 'til the end
"Big hug for you Emily!
Did you know you're my best friend?"
I felt my best when Ruth was near
I felt I could be me
She was all the things I'm not
Everything I wanted to be
She didn't come to school one week
I visited her home
I found her lying sick in bed
But she didn't even moan
Ruth was her normal happy self
Despite how bad she looked
She told me she would be alright
"The flu just has me hooked!"
My best friend died the next day
They couldn't tell me why
They told me she had left a note
I felt they didn't try
'Dear Emily,' the note read
'I'm sorry you didn't know,
You didn't need my problems
You had your own to tow.'
'Read Timothy 4 verse 12;
It's what made me who I am.
Forever yours,P.S Emily,
Do the best you can!'
'Be an example of what we stand for;
In everything you do
Spread the love on to others
As I spread it on to you.'
