As some of you know i went on trek a few weeks ago. At first i did nothing but complain about the heat and bugs but then i got thinking of the handcart companies that i had to come through there in the middle of no where most had no shoes or blankets ... i have so much respect for the pioneers after going on this trek
To start out the first day we arrive at the church at 5:30am of course me being me hops in the shower at 5:00 and am rushing out the door at 5:40 haha oops .. so i get to the church and theres like 200 hundred ppl including all the ma's pa's big bros and sisters ... and im just like wow how are we going to keep track of all these ppl and what if i dont know anyone in my family will i get along with my family .. well here it is about 6:00 and everyone is finally there so we have a devotional. then the moment we've all been waiting for we FINALLY get to find out who is in our families ... and ya i jynxed myself i knew absolutely no one. so i was kinda sad because like everyone i knew was with someone that they knew. then we loaded up the busses each company had there own bus (each company had about 6 families) haha ya guess what my company was supposed to leave first but our bus broke down on the way to get us ... they got the problem fixed though.. so we arrive up in martins cove after a long bus ride and load up our hand carts and we are on our way... i thought pulling that cart would be easy to pull it didtn look like it was to heavy boy was i wrong once we hit that first hill i just wanted to die i was all sweaty and im not very strong and of course my brothers being all tough wanted to run up the hill with the cart me and my ma and sisters had to stop for like 3 minutes to catch our breath we finally get to our campsite which seemed like we had been treking for days haha ya only 3 hours i wanted to just give up right then ... and not only that they were making us square dance after dinner ... i thought there is no way they are getting me to square dance ... ya my ma and pa were not goign to take no as answer they literally dragged me to the where they were doing the square dancing (yes i know im stubborn) ... it wasnt long till i finally joined in with everyone and was dancing and laughing along with everyone.. then the dread bed time came we actually had to shut up .. me stop talking haha right! ... well we have family prayer and all lay out our sleeping bags and of course one of my sisters said she had to use the bathroom so all the sudden all the girls were like me too ... so we all walk to the bathroom holding our flashlights hoping no snakes attack or something and we walk past this campsite and one of the pas jumped out in front of us ya i've never laughed so hard in my life seeing all my sisters and my ma freaking out ... so ya we finally get back to camp after waiting in line at the bathrooms forever it seemed like every girl that came had to go to the bathroom ... so we all fall asleep and next thing i know it pouring rain and ya we didnt have tents we were sleeping on tarps my ma and pa brought an extra tarp and put it over us so we all fell back asleep
... to be coutinued

i know you guys are so excited to hear about the second day so hear it is We all wake up bright and early at 6:30 after the long gurling trek the day before and being rudely awakened in the middle of the night from the pouring rain i don't think anyone was excited to be up well no one but my pa he was up making breakfast and humming who knows what... and of course every girl in the camp had to go to the bathroom so i wait very impatiently at the end of the line cause i took my time waking up... oh joy another happy person as my friend heather sees me waiting in line trying not to pee my pants ... haha .. she comes running up to me and is like "hi amber don't you think this is so cool" ... haha cool is not exactly the word I'd use for it more like cruel hard work ... k maybe not cruel but it is hard work.. so anyways i get back to my campsite after what seemed like hours of waiting in line at the bathroom .. breakfast is ready and everyone is finally starting to look a little more awake right after breakfast we make our lunches put them in a cooler on our cart pack up all are stuff and put it on the cart (oh and i forgot to mention earlier my family had two carts to pull cause one of our sisters tour her ACL the day before trek) so after we have our cart load up and our sister in her cart we wait for everyone to finish up of course my family is the first to be packed up because we are pretty amazing like that... so its about 8:00 and everyone is finally ready to leave YAY!.. so we start trekking and guess what we are trekking back to the exact same place we started and of course me not thinking before i talked was like "why didn't we just stay there last night if we have to trek back"... my ma and pa were just like "looks like someone woke up on the wrong side of the tarp" then all of us cracked up laughing .. so we start our trek back to were we started and about an hour into our trek a pa from another company has a heart attack ... like while we were trekking it was the scariest thing in my life good thing we had walky-talkies so that we could get a hold of the missionaries at martins cove if anything happened so we let them now and they tell us they will get a four wheeler out to pick him up ASAP once we all got to our first bathroom stop they asked each family to have a family prayer for the pa that had had a heart attack after everyone is done we continue on our way back and ya those hills we went up the day before we now have to go down ... haha ya not fun at all i probably fell like ten times... theres this side trail that we take so that we can go up into martins cove and do the Sweet Water crossing so we get going down this trail and get up to this area that says handcart parking and i was like what?.. anyways there was a missionary there directing us what to do and there was already one group up in the cove so we sat and ate lunch till the group came back down and we were told that we could go .. well we didn't go straight into martins cove.. we stopped in this grassy area just before the cove and had a little devotional one of the big brothers sang this song called Prayer of a Walking Child (heres a link if you would like to read the lyrics www.inspirationalldsmusic.com/albums/prayerlyrics.shtml ) .. i think by the end of that song everyone was in tears.. after the song our stake president stand up and tells us that while we are up in the cove we aren't to talk then he offers a prayer and after the prayer we all walk away silently not saying a word to anyone and as we walked away one of the pas was playing his harmonica in the back ground.... to think i was walking where the pioneers had walked and some had fallen dead as walking silently through the cove i felt the spirit stronger then i had ever felt in my life and tears were streaming down not only mine but everyones face we weren't being taught through words or the song that we had just heard but the spirit and to see my sister struggle on her crutches through the cove yet not complain not once my brothers insisted on carrying her through the cove but she wanted to go through it herself after the walk through the cove we still didn't talk much besides talking about how we would cross the river my family decided we would all cross the river holding hands and two of our brothers would carry our injured sister across .. and where we crossed was called the sacred crossing so we were very quiet and crossed slowly after that we went back got our carts and went back to the place we started the day before then loaded up in the buses to get to our next campsite which was a 30 minute drive then we set up camp and eat dinner and had a night devotional where the guy that was in charge of martins cove told us all these cool stories and stuff about how they had bought the land and stuff then we all went to bed putting a tent up just in case it rained again which it didn't thank goodness ... to be continued

i know you guys are so excited to hear about the second day so hear it is We all wake up bright and early at 6:30 after the long gurling trek the day before and being rudely awakened in the middle of the night from the pouring rain i don't think anyone was excited to be up well no one but my pa he was up making breakfast and humming who knows what... and of course every girl in the camp had to go to the bathroom so i wait very impatiently at the end of the line cause i took my time waking up... oh joy another happy person as my friend heather sees me waiting in line trying not to pee my pants ... haha .. she comes running up to me and is like "hi amber don't you think this is so cool" ... haha cool is not exactly the word I'd use for it more like cruel hard work ... k maybe not cruel but it is hard work.. so anyways i get back to my campsite after what seemed like hours of waiting in line at the bathroom .. breakfast is ready and everyone is finally starting to look a little more awake right after breakfast we make our lunches put them in a cooler on our cart pack up all are stuff and put it on the cart (oh and i forgot to mention earlier my family had two carts to pull cause one of our sisters tour her ACL the day before trek) so after we have our cart load up and our sister in her cart we wait for everyone to finish up of course my family is the first to be packed up because we are pretty amazing like that... so its about 8:00 and everyone is finally ready to leave YAY!.. so we start trekking and guess what we are trekking back to the exact same place we started and of course me not thinking before i talked was like "why didn't we just stay there last night if we have to trek back"... my ma and pa were just like "looks like someone woke up on the wrong side of the tarp" then all of us cracked up laughing .. so we start our trek back to were we started and about an hour into our trek a pa from another company has a heart attack ... like while we were trekking it was the scariest thing in my life good thing we had walky-talkies so that we could get a hold of the missionaries at martins cove if anything happened so we let them now and they tell us they will get a four wheeler out to pick him up ASAP once we all got to our first bathroom stop they asked each family to have a family prayer for the pa that had had a heart attack after everyone is done we continue on our way back and ya those hills we went up the day before we now have to go down ... haha ya not fun at all i probably fell like ten times... theres this side trail that we take so that we can go up into martins cove and do the Sweet Water crossing so we get going down this trail and get up to this area that says handcart parking and i was like what?.. anyways there was a missionary there directing us what to do and there was already one group up in the cove so we sat and ate lunch till the group came back down and we were told that we could go .. well we didn't go straight into martins cove.. we stopped in this grassy area just before the cove and had a little devotional one of the big brothers sang this song called Prayer of a Walking Child (heres a link if you would like to read the lyrics www.inspirationalldsmusic.com/albums/prayerlyrics.shtml ) .. i think by the end of that song everyone was in tears.. after the song our stake president stand up and tells us that while we are up in the cove we aren't to talk then he offers a prayer and after the prayer we all walk away silently not saying a word to anyone and as we walked away one of the pas was playing his harmonica in the back ground.... to think i was walking where the pioneers had walked and some had fallen dead as walking silently through the cove i felt the spirit stronger then i had ever felt in my life and tears were streaming down not only mine but everyones face we weren't being taught through words or the song that we had just heard but the spirit and to see my sister struggle on her crutches through the cove yet not complain not once my brothers insisted on carrying her through the cove but she wanted to go through it herself after the walk through the cove we still didn't talk much besides talking about how we would cross the river my family decided we would all cross the river holding hands and two of our brothers would carry our injured sister across .. and where we crossed was called the sacred crossing so we were very quiet and crossed slowly after that we went back got our carts and went back to the place we started the day before then loaded up in the buses to get to our next campsite which was a 30 minute drive then we set up camp and eat dinner and had a night devotional where the guy that was in charge of martins cove told us all these cool stories and stuff about how they had bought the land and stuff then we all went to bed putting a tent up just in case it rained again which it didn't thank goodness ... to be continued I enjoy reading all of the detail that you are putting in your post Amber! I know that it was hard work, but it really makes me wish that I had been there to experience it too! PS: I hope that the "Pa" from the other family makes a complete recovery from his heart attack.

The Third day ... i know finaly it took me long enough ... haha We wake up at 6:30 and EVERYTHING is covered in dew. guess what that means?! we didnt have to hurry as fast today cause everything had to dry out before we could pack it yay! when i first got out of my sleeping bag a was shivering it was still quite cold out the sun was quite up all the way.... oh and theres pa humming and cooking breakfast again.. and of course i didnt want to be last to the bathroom so i book it and guess what there was no line .. but there was a line at the guys bathroom haha suckers! i wish i had my camera so i could take a picture of that i line at the guys bathroom not the girls the guys ... lol anyways... so we eat breakfast and packed up once everything was dried out and then we were on our way it was ecspecially hot today and the grass was really swampy and there were millions of bugs that no amount of bug spray could repell .. ok maybe it wasnt that bad but it was pretty bad.. we had a few creeks that we had to walk over today they were only about ankle deep so it wasnt to bad except thats where the bugs thickest... we stop for lunch just before we cross another river we didnt think it looked like it would be to hard to cross boy were we wrong ... we get to the river bank and it was a really steap muddy hill only about three feet long but boy was it hard to hold the cart back so it wouldnt roll over the kids up in front....the mud was ankle deep and once we got to it we just slipped right down into the river it then we so the other side of the bank and it was the exact same way... i thought there is no way we are going to make it up that..well with alot of pushing and slipping and falling and having to get back up we finally made it.. boy was i glad that was over and a bathroom break right after it which i really needed right then ... haha ... we walk not even like half a mile when guys in military outfits like the mormon battalion .. we stop their and they tell us they need all the pas and their sons to come with them to help in the war... so one family at a time the pas and their sons left ... i didnt really think anything of it till my pa and brothers left then i couldnt hold back the tears... as the men walked up the hill one of the girls started singing As Sisters In Zion and we all joined in... once we were done all the men turn around and started singing Arm of Helaman ... wow ... that just brought even more tears.. all of the girls go back to our carts with our mas and say a prayer then we slowly make our way up the hill... two carts for me my two sisters and my ma because we have our injured sis who cant really walk .. so two of us to a cart but next thing we know their are girls from other families that came to help us ... there are now 4 to a cart but that hill seemed like it would never end with me and my mom in the front just pulling and balling our eyes out not only because we felt like we had no strength but the spirit that was there right at that moment.. me and my ma fell to our knees in the middle of the hill we had no more strength to move on ... but we had to... even though we felt like we could not stand another minute we said another prayer that we'd have the strength to make it to the top... it was amazing what happened next we stood up feeling we had no strength to move .. but it felt as though their was an angel by our side helping us up that hill... the load was all the sudden lighter.. and im not saying it was easy now ... the load was just a little lighter it seemed and we found an inner strength we didnt know was there... when we got to the top of the hill i look up and all the guys are standing there tears rolling down their faces and they looked like they wanted to jump out and help us that last couple feet but knew they couldnt .. that we needed to get through it ourselfs .. we made it we finally made it my family was the last one up but we made it and our pa and brothers come over and we all gather in a group hug no words were spoken.. we just stood there hugging each other while the tears still flowed down our cheeks ... and me barely able to stand (the growth plate in one of my ankles rub together and my ankle was just ponding with pain) looks up at my family and im just like " I don't know aobut you guys but i think i just learned one of the biggest lessons of my life" ... and then we all just kinda sat on the ground and talked about what we had just went through .. my pas and brothers said just walking up that hill made them tired and they honestly thought we werent going to make it up the hill with out them but we did ... now we are all just kinda stopping for a break walking around talking with friends and stuff i find my friend heather and alix sitting out away from everyone else talking so i go over and join and we all hug ... and yes more tears ... and then all of us talked about it till it was time that we all had to go back to our families and start treking again i tried to just kinda walk on my toes on my foot that was hurting and my pa and brothers realize and they are just like "Amber get in the cart you, you should of told us your ankle was bothering you" ... i told them i'd be fine i'd just walk behind the cart but they would not take no as answer they picked me up and put me in the cart i saw this huge hill coming up so i beg them to just let me walk up this one hill ... i didnt want them to have to pull me up it but they wouldnt let me out of the cart .. great i guess i'd be stuck in there till we got back to camp .. since we were just going in a huge circle that day... well all that bumping around in the cart made me really have to go to the bathroom.. and we finally made it back to the bathroom my pa helps me out of the cart and i book it to the bathroom i didnt care how much my ankle was killing me i just needed to go to the bathroom ... so after that we load the buses and go to our last camp site after we get camp set up we go on a short like 3 minute hike (which my pa and brothers carried me because they refused to let me walk on my ankle) were we stopped on a side of a hill and a devotional .. then we head back to camp and have dinner and head to bed after our long day of treking .. and it was really cold so we all curled up in the bottoms in our sleeping bags trying to stay warm ..and we all drift off to sleep ... to be continued
