Ok, so now you have the chess board all set up. Take a pencil or marker and on the left hand side margin......starting with the first square on White's side (it's a dark square by the way) mark it "1" and then the next square up is # 2, then #3 and so on until you reach #8 at the very top.
Now at the top margin.....going across ......starting at the left(with the same square that you have marked as #8 on the side) is also marked letter "a", then the next square to the right would be letter "b", then letter "c" and so on until you reach the far end in the upper right hand corner which is a dark square and it would be letter "h".
You now have coordinates just like the x and y ones that you use in a math graph! You will be using letters and numbers to name each square on the chessboard.
Lets take a few examples: We'll start on the white side......take a look at the knight on the queens side......the Queen's knight=Qn is on square b1......on it's first move.......it has two choices......a3 or c3
recording the game:
White's move................ black's move
1. b1 to c3........................ ... b8 to c6
Now lets see what that same move would look like on black' s side.
Black's Queens Knight is on square b8.......on it's first move.....it has two choices......a6 or c6...... I'm going to copy whites first move so it will move to c6!
2. g1 to f3................................ g8 to f6
On white and black's second move.....I moved the other knight.....just remember to always put the coordinates (using letters first) of where they are now to(~) where they went on their move.
